Yes, I know that the Michigan Upper Peninsula is not in Canada. But I had done the Toronto-Winnipeg drive on the Canadian side twice in the last month, and that is over 2000 km, so I decided for some new scenery. And Google said it would be 5 hours shorter starting from Stratford, so over the Bluewater Bridge at Sarnia, and north to Mackinac.
As I went over the bridge, I stopped into the tourist info building. I was enchanted by the area, and the young lad who worked there confirmed that there were a number of restaurants and pubs in town where I could sit on a patio for dinner, and the hotel was likely $60/night.
Enchanting really describes St. Ignace. I had dinner on a patio overlooking the water and watched the ferries come and go to Mackinac Island. I got a room at the hotel, left the car and walked back into town for a free outdoor showing of The Italian Job. I walked along the beach, and saw a beautiful sunset. I wished I could stay longer, it was a beautiful place. The sunset still makes me smile.
